In The Name Of Humanity is a collaborative-creation, devised show created with local indigenous and first nations artists from Manitoulin Island, Canada, directed by Carlos García Estévez and Paige Allerton.

This TransPoetico Production and third part of The Epic Borders Trilogy was produced and hosted by Debajehmujig Theatre Group and premiered as part of their annual 6 Foot Festival October 7th 2021.  Since, it has been further refined and developed in a second creation period in November and December of 2021.

The process of creation used Manifesto Poetico’s fundamental research, and living pedagogic language to make a new theatrical language on the spot for and with the group and their audience. The show is nourished by current news, local knowledge, every-day stories as well as traditional knowledge, provided by elders and community members of Wikwemikong, Elder David Osawabine, and the Debajehmujig Team.

Manifesto Poetico has embarked on a journey of research with participating artists, exploring the elements that are their reality and surroundings in order to transpose them into a poetic language: the social, the patterns, the waves, the hopes, the dreams and the consequences.

“There is so much loss as a result of all the destruction of land. We want to leave a better place for children yet to be born. We want to leave good footprints for them to follow.”

In The Name Of Humanity

I dream of horizons, with stairs to climb to the peak of our essence.

I dream with the spirits and the hearts of the slaves of our terrible social organization.

May the agony of my unsatisfied soul not last a lifetime! May my soul not die!

We search for the spirit that animates and unifies the whole.

We embrace the fundamental teachings that generate equality between human beings, social groups and the Peoples of the Earth.

We want to honor the lesson of love and responsibility for the life of all human beings and all living species.

To listen to the sound of Mother Earth that reminds us how to love and how to be careful!

It reminds us how we think and how we walk; how we perceive ourselves, how others perceive us.

We search for the source that provides a meaningful education for our upcoming generations around the world.

We want to recall a story in the name of humanity!

- Carlos García Estévez. Manifesto Poetico 2021

About The Epic Borders Trilogy

The Epic Borders Trilogy is a series of productions taking place in Mexico, Northern Ireland and Canada. The Trilogy deals with themes and stories of people from areas with a long history of being torn politically and geographically by borders. The Epic Borders Trilogy aims to tell every-day personal stories from these different locations, woven together to expose the epic proportions of our collective story.

In 2016 artistic directors Carlos García Estévez and Paige Allerton met the italian economist, political scientist and a leading figure in the anti-globalisation movement, Riccardo Petrella at the World Social Forum in Montreal (Canada).

During their encounter they discussed the latest book of Petrella Au nom de l'humanité – L'audace mondiale (In the name of humanity). The conclusion for Manifesto Poetico at that meeting was to serve, through storytelling, the content of scientist-philosopher Riccardo Petrella.

In human history, to this day, why have most things been done in the name of God, in the name of the Nation or in the name of Money? When will the moment come when actions will be done in the name of Humanity?

“The true global challenge is to create together the consolidation of consciousness for the unique and fundamental responsibility of humanity that concerns the safeguarding and protection of life on earth.”

- Riccardo Petrella

“Since we have the atomic weapon and other bacteriological and chemical weapons, we understood that the human species was the only living species capable of destroying the life of planet Earth in its entirety, and therefore also of safeguarding it and of protecting it. Hence the awareness of a global responsibility of humanity towards the totality of life on the planet.”
